Article about Dunaliella Salina
Polish source

Dunaliella Salina is a type of halophilic microalgae, mainly found in salt fields and some lakes, such as Lake Hillier located off the southern coast of Western Australia. They are known for their antioxidant properties due to their ability to produce large amounts of carotenoids, including beta-carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A. This also gives them their pink coloration. The use of this ingredient in cosmetics is increasing.

According to Mintel, the use of Dunaliella Salina extract has nearly quadrupled last year compared to 2016. The main claims associated with its inclusion in cosmetics are moisturizing, anti-aging, rejuvenating, and brightening effects.

Among the new products with pink algae is the Josie Maran Argan Beta-Retinoid Pink Algae serum, which smooths wrinkles, fine lines, and mitigates the effects of harmful UV radiation. The product’s formula contains pro-retinol derived from Dunaliella Salina.

Another example is the Biossance Marine Algae eye cream. It contains pink algae that reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles. Dunaliella Salina extract is also found in Tonymoly 2XR Collagen emulsion. Besides algae, which provide “pink vitality,” it contains low-molecular-weight collagen, hydrolyzed collagen extract, and vitamin B12.

Mintel experts have noted that the interest in pink algae, which are responsible for specific cosmetic properties and give them a characteristic color, has led to a trend for pink pigment in formulations. However, this may also result from the use of other ingredients, such as pink aloe. Aloe extract and aloe juice are well-known skincare ingredients, and the innovative use of pink aloe adds new charm and trendiness to the classic.

Meanwhile, the brand Pink Vitamin claims that the vitamin B12 used in its cosmetics provides the perfect pink skin tone. It creates visually appealing pink product formulas and emphasizes their brightening effects.
