My cousin (that travels a bit) has this theory that he can sense how a country is doing by their best-selling books.

So before he even leaves the airport he checks the airport shop.

He said (last time we spoke, many years ago) in Spain that was self-help books. Which means people here aren’t happy. Living in Spain isn’t a happy experience.

I was innocent enough back then, to think it means we have a certain mindset or smth. Like self-improvement.

But yeah it actually means quality of life is low. In better countries, people don’t self-improve. This only comes from ruthless cultures.

Now…it takes living somewhere to know how it is.

I think best-sellers now are mystery and romance. Which simply means people have stopped spending money on books except bored housewives.

fun fact, in high school i told my english teacher i didnt read fiction and it is a waste of time and she told me id change opinion as i grew up

she was right
