I’ve been battling with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) for the past 15 years, ever since I contracted pneumonia. Initially, my reactions were manageable, mainly to perfumes, smoke, and air pollution. However, after a recent exposure to heated baking soda and vinegar fumes intensified my symptoms, causing burning sensations in my nose and chest. Now, I find myself reacting to almost every smell, including detergents, mattresses, and even the smell of new wood. Everyday is like getting harder and harder to live and manage my symptoms. Exposure triggers severe reactions for me, includingheadaches, dizziness, nausea, severe throat pain, respiratory issues, and fatigue.

I did a bit of research about the potential root causes-
Underlying Gene Defects: Research suggests that MCS may be linked to underlying gene defects affecting detoxification ability, glutathione levels, methylation, and neurotransmitter function. Genes such as GST, CYP, SOD1, and SOD2 play crucial roles in these processes. When triggered by factors like excessive exposures, medications, viruses, or infections, these gene defects can contribute to the development of MCS.
Liver Function: When individuals with MCS experience repeated chemical exposures, it can overwhelm the liver’s capacity to metabolize toxins effectively. This overload can lead to a breakdown in the liver’s detoxification pathways, impairing its ability to neutralize and eliminate harmful substances from the body.
