I’m from NYC, and yes, I love the hell out of this place. It has helped shape me into the person I have become by showing me so much of the world and humanity in just one compact area. It has helped me learn to find inner peace within the chaos of humanity. It has helped me find comfort in people thinking differently than me and somehow, finding harmony within our differences. I owe a lot of my ability to be unconditionally accepting to living in a city that shows you everything all at once.
Everything I said about me applies to a lot of New Yorkers I come across. I’ve met a lot of remarkable people in this city, kind of people that give me more hope in the world. Yes, it’s rough here and it is 100% a love and hate city. It reallllly isn’t for everyone. But the people it’s for, love it to death.
I always run into propaganda from the outside world about how dirty, crime ridden, ‘mamdanistan,’ and terrible this place is and it always makes me laugh lol. It’s the safest it’s been all my life (and statistically) and this is coming from someone that lives in the south bronx (still the most crime ridden area in the city).
I see a lot of hate for Mamdani in the internet but I personally got love for the guy. He appears to genuinely care for the people of the city and I don’t remember the last time I felt that coming from a politician. Could it be a fassad? Sure, but if he is, his actions are backing up the fassad better than any other leaders in the country at the moment. In my opinion at least.
Anyways, yeah, as you can see… I clearly love my city. So, where are you from and what makes you love or not love the place you’re from?

Europe, Poland, currently based in Warsaw. Lots of wonky political stuff going on due to proximity to a warzone, oyyy. Otherwise, I kinda like the place, especially the bigger cities - the smaller towns tend to be a bit bigoted due to propaganda, political and religious (there’s not much proper spirituality going on, it’s why I like the idea of this forum).

It’s a universal thing about cities and smaller towns though eh? Smaller towns are closer minded and more afraid of the outsiders or things that go against the collective of that culture. Cities tend to be more open minded because everyone is already bunched in together and exposed to all kinds of lanes of thought.
It’s the same thing everywhere I’ve noticed. It’s why cities lean liberal and rural lean conservative. And I get it, logically, it just makes sense that it would work that way.
