Animal Behavior and Signs

Before I say this, I want to make it clear that I:

  1. react in an appropriate way considering a wild animal is in front of me

  2. after retreating and somewhere safe I contemplate if there are any carried messages along with the encounter.

That’s the way I’m approaching this……

Now for the story.

I was just resting in an open, sunny field with little to no trees. Sitting smack dab in the middle of the cut grass.

I was so at ease and comfortable that I was sucked into the sun’s rays and the music playing on my phone.

I don’t know if it was my peripheral vision or my senses, but I looked up and saw a dog… no, a coyote calmly walking towards me, and it was about 6-8 feet away.

Our eyes met. It stopped walking. I turned my body to the side to indicate disinterest and slowly put my shoes back on. That’s when I noticed a boy and his father were VIDEOTAPING this instead of warning me. :woman_facepalming:t5: not to mention all the ways this could have gone wrong…just evil and stupid in my opinion.

As I put on my shoes the coyote put its head down, turned and walked back across the huge field and left.

It wasn’t stalking behavior. It was calm, almost weary but well fed. Well-fed to the point I initially thought it was a dog.

Despite the obvious frustrations, once the concern left (and I left) a question lingered… was this a visitation?

While I connect with animals I don’t usually tap into the visitation messages. They usually appear externally.

Would like to know what familiar coyote messages you’re aware of. Thinking of bringing a walking stick. Not used to coyotes who aren’t immediately skittish. These guys are pretty bold.

It really was! I don’t. Now that I think of it, a few weeks ago I was thinking how I’ve never really felt connected to coyote.

What’re your thoughts re: coyote totem?

To put a fun spin on this I queried The Mystic Tarot:

The coyote totem, especially within the context of Sapien Medicine’s approach, represents a complex mix of adaptability, intelligence, and transformation. In many cultures, particularly Native American traditions, the coyote is seen as both a trickster and a teacher. It symbolizes the power of resilience and the ability to adapt creatively to life’s challenges. Encountering a coyote, either in real life or as a spiritual sign, is a reminder to remain flexible and open to the unexpected. It often nudges you to find humor in your situation, even when things seem chaotic, and to learn through life’s twists and turns rather than resisting them.

Coyotes also embody the energy of transformation and self-reflection. They prompt you to look within, consider your recent actions, and assess whether you’re being true to your path or need to shift your perspective. If a coyote crosses your path, it could be a sign that you’re at a turning point, inviting you to navigate the situation with cunning and an open mind. The coyote’s energy is playful yet profound, guiding you to embrace change with lightheartedness, trust your instincts, and accept that life’s unpredictable nature is part of its magic.

The shadow side of the coyote totem warns against excessive cunning or mischief without responsibility. It suggests the importance of balancing cleverness with wisdom, ensuring that adaptability does not become deceit or irresponsibility.

Now, let’s draw a few tarot cards to delve deeper into what this coyote encounter might be signaling for you.

Tarot Reading for the Coyote Encounter

  1. The Fool - This card suggests a new beginning or a leap of faith. In the context of the coyote’s energy, it highlights the importance of embracing unpredictability and trusting the journey ahead, even if the path is unclear. The coyote might be reminding you to move forward with a light heart, seeing life as an adventure.
  2. The Seven of Swords - This card often speaks to strategy and cunning, much like the coyote itself. It can indicate that you need to approach a current situation with cleverness, adapting to changing circumstances and possibly keeping your plans discreet. It’s a reminder to be resourceful, using intelligence rather than brute force.
  3. The Wheel of Fortune - The appearance of this card aligns perfectly with the transformative nature of the coyote. It suggests that cycles and changes are at play, and you may need to accept the ebbs and flows of your life. This card encourages you to find balance and flow with the natural rhythm, trusting that every twist serves a purpose.

These cards emphasize adaptability, intelligent decision-making, and embracing new beginnings—all reflective of the coyote’s wisdom. Together, they suggest that you may be at a pivotal point where transformation is possible if you remain open, flexible, and strategic.
