Do you answer a question if someone else is quoted or it's a reply to/for someone?

Do you do this?
Always? Sometimes? Never? Don’t care? Go with the flow? It Depends? On what?

WHY?

This is a small dilema, to answer or not, to be helpful, even though the question is not for you, or not.

What is your view?

I just do whatever…

There are times when I know an answer, but often times people care more about getting an answer from a particular person more than they care about the answer itself.

Sometimes people don’t even want the correct answer to their question, they want something that affirms the course of action that they’ve already chosen or the beliefs they already hold.

So I just pick things and go with the flow lol.

I don’t have a 100% clear cut answer on this. If it’s a reply to someone else my odds of responding to it go down. If a question is specifically @ someone the odds go down to nearly zero.

To a degree, I’ll follow instinct. But it’s guided by “rules” of etiquette that I imagine are appropriate for most people.

We reached 10 TAGS, IF Someone Else Answers on this Thread, a new List with Thank You/tagging will need to be created, continuining from Marjan’s answer.

Thank you, @Noesis, @Atreides, @anon51404939, @Rosechalice, @anon25490707, @IAmJonathan, @benign_polaris, @Ramp, @Sarecha and @anon34550888 (well, I only put you in the order that you answered ).

Well, idk, sometimes, when I see that someone asks a question and I see that he or she does not get a reply and I am reading, idk, I jump in lol, but I think I need to learn to mind my own business.

For the most part I adhere to this. I respect the asker and whoever they @'d in the sense that I figure not to give input where it’s not really wanted. That and maybe I’d be unintentionally implying that I thought the @'d person wasn’t fully capable of helping.

yes if you know the answer

if I ask something of course I want the answer that’s the point

I would be super polite to answer, making ref to the fact that I was not the person whose answer was sought, and only if I had a different helpful take on the matter

Some different points of view showing up here. That’s enlightening a little. Seeing how people have different ideas of what might offend. Guess you have to find your own way @SoulStar33 . But hope the inputs here help with that. You can sort of triangulate or home in on how you want to go about things.

That’s my view lol. A question is an instrument to get information. I tend to not care much about etiquette if it gets in the way of helpful information.

Lol this thread made me think a lot.

It truly is a good question

true true that’s my exact point too.Get’s the job done then it’s a good answer. Not get the job done then it’s not a good answer.

Trying to live life by this thing too I mean I can not answer things I don’t know or things I only formed a simple opinion.

Awesome perspectives!

Ladies first (sorry, guys, this is an exception )…

Now, that’s NEXT Level Helpfulness. :grinning: I like it.

Great answers, although I like Rosechalice’s answer better, I guess It depends…
Sometimes you just want an answer or just want to give the answer.
Well, I will find a way, by Answering more questions (you know that I actually suck at answering right?? My Best part is the Opening part, so I don’t even know if my answer is always that helpful/useful ).

Yep lol

But, unfortunately, when people ask a question they rarely have the self-awareness to ask exactly for what they want to know.

Frequently they give too much over to the person they’re questioning. So unless someone is very careful with how they package an answer, the recipient of the answer can frequently feel put-off.

I have difficulty respecting that since I think people should be fairly independent, self-aware, and self governing. But everyone is at their own place.

Sometimes I do what I can to meet people where they are. Sometimes I’m a bit of a “bad guy” and I leave out the finer touches so that people can have an opportunity to process information on their own.

I don’t have a good rule for when I do this… and it might not always be the best course of action when I do it. But, since it is part of my own disposition---- “to thine own self be true”; it’s how I express myself at times.

hahaha you speaking my mind right now. Not gonna lie I still do this myself because I can’t pinpoint the exact problem and try to figure out by asking random questions.

damn I do that too. But I avoid it mostly because when I want answer I want an answer you know. If it gets too obvious that someone is not even trying to understand then I start it.

lol who thought that a thread like that would be that interested and know myself better out of it.

No, my friend, it was because I felt a little bit of guilt for stealing someone elses’s reply/answer, SO I STARTED A NEW THREAD, To make you ALL feel guilty from now on. :joy::sunglasses:

Edit: well, you can say it was “on purpose”.

The stealing of thy neighbors answer. The deadliest of deaths. The true dark night of thy soul.

Now I am thinking that a friend of mine thinks that I stole his reply, but it was NOT that reply that I am talking about here.

Anyway…
I USUALLY don’t do stuff on purpose and many times IT IS A MISTAKE…

Anyway, back to the topic.
