Problem is this particular social contract is getting more ridiculous. The solution is to either stop visiting the place or leave a review stating guilt tripping, but I understand, it is easier said than done.

You like this place, and you want to be a regular but don’t want to be known as regular customer that is a “non-tipper” and must be obliged to tip upon your takeout.

Yeah, I think suggested tipping will kill tipping. And tipping for pick-up is an upside-down world. I won’t do it.

If you wait a bit, you won’t have to tip robots and machines

A question of cultural mindset:

I agree that that doesn’t make sense. What service are you paying for there someone to hand you the bag?

I’m sure eventually the machines will ask us for some wd40

Yeah, I closed my phone and I was like “wait… I’m sure they’ll find a way for all these humanoid, smiling robots to ask for tips” :joy:

Egypt is the “King of Tipping Expecations” btw.

When you enter a toilet at an Egyptian airport, there will always be some dude in there showing you with his finger where the next free pissoir is and then holding his hand open and expecting a tip, LOOOL

Egyptians expect foreigners to tip them for literally EVERYTHING!

I am not mad at them because it is a Third World Country and these people are really in hard situations most of the time.

But an extra dude putting my groceries into a bag at the supermarket payment counter in a First World Country… this is cringe content for TikTok…

Yeah. He isn’t tipped though he gets paid MW

Dude, some Islands make you pay for everything they do or don’t do and even nature, bathing in the river, enjoying the beach, walking in the forest.

We were also advised to give money to every homeless to not get robbed. So we just walked handing cash like food at the zoo.

And everyone was in on it, the homeless knew you were supposed to give them money. They’d walk to you like “gotta pay the toll to walk the streets”.

It wasn’t that expensive in their currency, but we felt exploited.

Just shake the dude’s hand after you come out of the stall.

Which is probably the reason why you will never visit that place again, right?

Which island was it?

I don’t like trashing people’s countries but it was an English speaking Caribbean country island.

Yeah, we were all mad at some points then we moved on.

Dudes were all smoking weed and drinking beer and then they’d pull out a dirty piece of paper and extort you then give you a coupon to go see the river or forest once.

Smoking weed in your face and extorting you.

Tiny little water way.

It’s not about paying a pass or tax, it’s about stopping you every 10 min with a made up thing to pay. Stop everything, you have to pay. And you can tell they feel smart about it.

The air was free though.

Hmm. I’ve tipped in Japan and Korea. I know it’s not expected there, but it wasn’t quite perceived as an insult, I’ve been assured, because I was an American and Americans are ignorant and generous. A kind of force of nature that cannot be corrected in this area. I’ve been able to not tip in restaurants, but I can’t help myself from tipping taxi drivers. It’s almost unconscious.

Except if he takes it out to your car, right. It’s been years, but I thought that was the rule.

Oh wow. I forgot about that! I’ve never seen that happen in real life I heard about it from my parents and grandparents
