Mahonia aquifolium, commonly known as Oregon grape, is a plant native to North America, particularly the Pacific Northwest. It is an evergreen shrub with holly-like leaves, bright yellow flowers, and deep blue-purple berries. The plant is well-known for its medicinal properties and is used in traditional medicine as well as modern herbal supplements.

  1. Active Compounds: The plant contains several bioactive compounds, including berberine, jatrorrhizine, and palmatine, which are responsible for its health benefits.

  2. Skin Health: Oregon grape is often used in topical creams and ointments to treat skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, and acne. The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of berberine make it effective for these purposes.

  3. Digestive Health: The plant has been traditionally used to support digestive health. It can help stimulate digestion, relieve constipation, and address various gastrointestinal issues.

  4. Immune Support: Mahonia aquifolium is believed to boost the immune system, partly due to its antimicrobial properties, making it useful in fighting infections.

  5. Anti-inflammatory Effects: The plant’s anti-inflammatory properties make it useful in managing chronic inflammatory conditions.

  6. Liver Health: Some evidence suggests that Oregon grape can help support liver function and aid in detoxification processes.

  7. Antioxidant Properties: The berries of the Oregon grape are rich in antioxidants, which can help protect the body from oxidative stress and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

  • Skin Conditioning: The extracts are known for their skin conditioning properties, which can improve the texture and suppleness of the skin, making it feel softer and smoother.

When using Oregon grape in beauty routines, it’s important to consider the form and concentration of the product, as well as your skin type and sensitivity. While Oregon grape can offer these benefits, it’s always recommended to perform a patch test before applying new products to your skin, especially if you have sensitive skin or known allergies. For personalized advice and to ensure safety, consulting with a dermatologist or skincare professional is advisable. They can guide you on the best way to incorporate Oregon grape into your beauty regimen for optimal results.

Also known in Scottish herbalism to effect (lower) the cravings of sugars. The bitter constituent (berberine) functions as a blood tonic (active in blood) and helps regulate blood glucose. It also activates the taste buds on the back of the tongue while acting in antithesis to the sweet buds on the front, and reconditions cravings. The combination is effective at reducing a sweet tooth and improving blood glucose levels.

Worked great for me back in my 20s.

Oregon, like the state. Grows everywhere here. Looks like Holly with blue berries instead of red.
