Responsibility of the Lighthouse Keeper

Received this today, felt it was worth sharing.

When the light is able to help steer ships into the harbor safely, the lighthouse rejoices! When this happens, however, the lighthouse keeper does not go over and have a party with the captain of the ship. Instead, the keeper silently rejoices and continues to shine the light. Most captains who reach port safely due to the light of the lighthouse never know the lighthouse keeper. The lighthouse keeper doesn’t publish a statement telling others that he saved a ship! He is silent and continues, often alone, anchored in the rock.

For those ships that did not look up to see the lighthouse, and who wound up on the rocks in disaster, the lighthouse may be saddened. But the lighthouse keeper does not go over to rescue the ship. The lighthouse keeper does not take responsibility for those who end up on the rocks! The lighthouse keeper does not go into depression about the event and dismantle the lighthouse due to the ship that didn’t look to see the light. NO. Instead, the lighthouse has one purpose, and that is to shine the light, shine the light, and shine the light.

Good way to look at things. I think sometimes the Lighthouse keeper just wants a bunk mate. Lol.

Wow that’s a tough one! Would you say the Lighthouse Keeper was like an enlightened being?

Yes we shouldn’t do things expecting anything in return but I admit my ego would expect just a simple “thank you” or some type of acknowledgement.

I would have a very hard time watching those ships (people) crashing and not feel any empathy for them or a desire to try to help them. That’s also one of my weaknesses I need to not try to save or help everyone.

Is there a message behind what you posted? I am trying to understand why I find it so hard to be an observer and remain neutral.

I think he’s saying if you’re a good person, just keep being you. Don’t change what you’re putting out there just because some people won’t use the good message you are living in order to help themselves.

You could take it that way…Is there any other way to interpret?

In this story, does the Lighthouse Keeper get nothing in return for his service?

But if you were the Lighthouse Keeper, then you were trying to help them, were you not? The Lighthouse does not play favorites or pick sides, it’s light is shown for all to see and benefit from. Why is that weakness?

Why do you get the sense that the Lighthouse Keeper in this story is a neutral observer?

Wow okay I obviously read and interpreted your post incorrectly. My apologies!

Ego like to not take responsibilty for his own suffering (giving power away) and to not admit that he doesnt have responsibility on others happiness (doesnt recognize power in others)

There is not much of the ego structure in the lightkeeper here :slightly_smiling_face:

I was posing questions to help you think about it more, as I got the impression that the story was really challenging you on a few beliefs you’re holding that may not be serving you as well as you think they do.

That was wordy…lol. Point is, I’m not saying you’re wrong, and I’m not saying you’re right. Actually, I’m a bit excited at the possibility of this story helping you have a breakthrough moment, as I can see hints of that beginning to happen.

Give it another go, see if you can figure out why you felt the way you did after reading it. If you’re willing to share more, I’m interested.

Let’s just say you didn’t exactly come across as being helpful. I felt like you quoted and lit up all my errors which was practically my entire post and then wrote sarcastic comments below each mistake.

But I am a big girl so I will give it another try.

The lighthouse is like our guardian angel always there to guide us and when we pay attention we succeed but we never acknowledge or thank our guardian angel nor does our guardian angel expect us to thank him/her.

Sometimes the answers to our trials are right before us if only we would look up and ask but we ignore the signs and crash and burn and even after we have fallen our guardian angel is still there showing us the way.

Please forgive me, that was not my intention. I still struggle sometimes with communicating proper tone, especially in a text-only medium. Sorry I came across poorly. :frowning:
