Just my opinion so with a grain of salt. But i think this is designed to take some of the emotional charge out of negative memories. So when you recall that same memory after working with this, instead of instantiating that memory with the stored emotion, feeling and attitudes of the attached thought form (could be hate,pain apathy, insecurity etc. It will instead surface with a much more neutral feeling allowing you to view it from a much calmer and more balanced perspective.
(imagine if you recalled one of your more painful memories but it had the emotion and feelings as if i asked you to recall what you bought at the store yesterday (neutral almost mundane feeling) From this different perspective you could probably find some new understanding or a more positive or forgiving way to look at this situation that previously hurt you in someway and heal a wound in the process.
