As a John Wick fan, unfortunately I have mixed feelings about this one. I mean the actress is amazing, can’t deny, but at times it felt too silly (with the grenades for instance) and the story was rather “normal”.
I agree the flamethrowers are cool. With the top down view, I gotta say it reminded me of using weapons cheats in GTA 2 to have the flame thrower.
And also, I think they said the plot was supposed to be between movies 3 and 4… But didn’t wick have a falling out with his family? Not sure about that one.
And somehow I was always had the feeling I was really there to see more of the baba yaga himself, even though it’s a spin-off.
So yeah, kinda… As much as I want this to be super awesome, I can’t say that it was. I’d probably also give it a 6.
I never paid too much attention to superhero movies. And most of the recent ones haven’t really appeal to me. But thinking back to the early 2000’s, there was a neat aesthetic for the time that I’m revisiting.
The Punisher was a favorite:
But all the ones from that era are standing out in my memory for some reason:
Or even the TV series:
There’s a lot of difference between then and now. The total aggregate of culture, and even the sort of morphic field of culture and patterns of living. All unique, and strangely different from what exists these days.
I do miss that timeframe. There seemed to be a lot more heart in the things that were made. And the emergent technological capabilities in film made for an interesting blending with practical effects and CGI. Lots of variety to see in how the producers assembled things. And a lot of the characters and stories felt more real to me—like it would be easier to step into those worlds. And, on the flip side, like just a little more discipline and effort could make my own life supernormal.
I get what you’re saying… Content in the 90s or early days was tonnes better compared to now. Creators today have no skills or talent; even with all the advanced technology we have today, the writing is just a massive turd. Still today I can’t even find anything that can beat the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
I’m not really a fan of superhero movies, although I thought the movie ‘Dark Knight’ was great because of Heath Ledger’s world-class acting in it. Spider-Man in 2001 was quite similar because it literally showed how f****d in the head the Green Goblin actually was, in the same fashion as with the Joker in the Dark Knight.
My favourite superhero movie, though, was Batman & Robin (1997) with that villain ‘Mr. Freeze’; I thought that was the best one they ever did. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s performance in that movie was probably one of the most iconic in his whole career I’ve ever seen, imo, and he was quite funny in it as well. He actually makes a really good villain, considering that he’s mostly known to be a protagonist in the majority of his films.
Oh the puns lol. That’s a good one. I don’t recall sitting through that one start-to-finish, but I definitely remember scenes from it.
I had been checking out a different Schwarzenegger film recently. End of Days – it’s quite a bit darker, but it was in the general vibe of some of the Doomsday rumblings that have been afoot with the Middle East shenanigans.
That’s another thing that seems to have gone away — the over-the-top action. We still have plenty of overdone action, but there was something undeniably unique when the likes of Arnie, Lundgren, Stallone, and VanDamme were younger and defined the genre. A bunch of different genres got absorbed into action in that era because Arnie and Stallone were almost like genres unto themselves lol.
Still a bit dark, but there was a lot of cultural depth in that one. Even though a lot of people hate religion, I think that there is a lot of compelling artistry and character development with that as a cultural backdrop. It seems to have faded a bit as well, from modern culture.
Supernatural, The Witcher, The Mandalorian, Game of Thrones, The Boys. I haven’t finished any of them and I want to watch True Detectives because I heard the first season was really good.
The Sopranos

Better Call Saul
Romanzo Criminale (Italian Show about Banda della Magliana, that ruled over rome from 1970s to 1990s)
