It is quite common here, calling it a stereotype is an understatement… my friend was disavowed because he chose to become a nature photographer… I was never allowed to pursue degree in Film Making, had to study Law instead!
What?!
Omg!
I mean do they renounce their children - as in denying them and not wanting to see them and not welcoming them at home?!
Yeah something like that, usually they don’t kick them out of homes, in our culture (indian) kids stay with parents until marriage, no matter how old, sometimes even after marriage, families stay together… so if kids are at home, they get silent treatment if they are under achievers and sometimes hurtful comments are passed, parents compare us to the next door neighours’ kids and relatives’ kids and as they say comparison is a thief of joy, so no matter what you achieve and how high in life you go, if you don’t become what they want you to become, you are despised…
OMG…
That’s terrible.
Well, at least they are not kicked out (like some westerners do).
Are newer generations of parents more open to let their children decide for their own and open to them not reaching the expected heights?
You dont know the kind of words they use to abuse, my brother , you wish you are kicked out…
I think we will see change from our generation, hopefully. Personally, I would give my future kids the freedom to pursue their dreams… and more of us are exposed to the outer world, we are more educated, have a sense of human limitations, we recognise the importance of mental health…
Don Salvador disavowed Dali at one moment, albeit for the publicity he didn’t like strongly. Hopefully situation changes for the best in future, soon the Noon Age will start, I’m a firm believer.
I heard about this phenomena in India. To be honest i thought it was a bit exagerated. But hearing this from first hand changes everything.
That’s sad… Every cultture have this hidden " gems"
Im not patriculary worried about You, You are into fields so there is some serios healing and deprogrraming going on
Comparatively my parents are much chiller than an average indian parent, lol… looking back now I realised, they were looking out for me. They didnt let me pursue film making because it is a highly competitive field and odds of success are little to nothing… but I still want to pursue filmaking some day when I attain financial freedom… atleast I got to express my creativity through ads…
Yeah, as you said, atleast i have fields, I would be lying if I told you I didn’t have some discontentment. Fate brought me here and I am working through my issues… I am definitely a better man than before…
Happens here too-
Might be the generation idk but there’s a common thread…
They’re not very good at gift giving
You give someone a gift for their birthday. You going to follow them around telling them what to do with it? Tell them how expensive it was? They didn’t ask you for the gift.
I think of parenting like that. Dictating what someone does with their life is like taking a gift back or defeats the purpose of the gift
Just my opinion, sorry
Maybe we can move these discussions in the new thread?
Just a suggestion.
@Rosechalice @Dr_Manhattan
Almost forgot this is a meme thread
That’s a fair point. Good topić for separate discussion .
I have seen this video a few days ago and it has left me speechless.
Especially the comments under the video.
I hope more people in your country wake up and strive for a better and more free future
Thanks for sharing, I respect and understand his perspective though I don’t agree with all he is saying, I especially lost it when he said majority cannot write their names even after graduating, that is self contradictory, lol. Yes, we have to improve on literacy, but in South India, where I am from, we have good literacy rates and comfortable way of living…
I love my country and my people, we have our differences in the name of caste and religion and crooked politicians who are exploiting them for their own benefit, only if we could put aside our differences, wake up, come together and work for the collective good as you rigthly said, we could easily create a developed nation on par or even better than any western nation…
Heck, we have the smartest bunch of people, our space tech is on par with many developed nations even though the budget is meagre compared to NASA. We are the pharmaceutical capital of the world, one of the few countries that have developed vaccine for Covid… we have sent vaccines on goodwill to many other countries… I could go on and on but it will all be irrelevant if we ignore the skeletons in our closet… My heart is burdened, the reason I am striving to be a part of bureaucracy is to try and make a change from inside the system even though I despise the system, I strongly believe the quote from Gandhi, ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’
@Rosechalice @Dr_Manhattan could you please move this discussion to general discussion or new debate thread, sorry I have spammed the meme thread and sorry for any inconvenience to my fellow forum members
No matter what anyone says, never, EVER feel any shame about using ANY level of type of magick to bring justice to the behavior of your parents.
You can pursue a career in film. You can shoot a good enough film with a smart phone. The main reason people once went to film school was to access expensive equipment. No one needs to do that now. A few books, some YouTube lectures, a streaming service to where you start deliberately watching particular directors, and some websites with PDF of more scripts than a film student would ever read. Since you probably already have a smart phone and an internet connection. You have almost everything you need. You certainly don’t need degree program. Many of the great directors—Hitchcock, Ford, Lean, Kubrick, etc.—never went to film school. Tarantino didn’t go to film school.
Take your phone and start shooting. There’s probably an open source editing program. I bet there are ants nearby. They’re easy enough to film and quite fascinating
Did my parents make mistakes? definitely! Will I hold those against them? NO!
I have grown to be an empathetic person and put any pain they caused through their words behind me, in my understanding, it is their first time experiencing this world, their first time being parents, just because they are born 25 years before me don’t necessarily mean they are this all knowing beings, they were bound to make mistakes. I am able to heal my inner child using fields, forgive them completely and let go of any resentment towards them… Justice for me now would be to live the life of my dreams despite all the childhood trauma…
I love this.
That is True Wisdom.
Parents are like God (isn’t that also a saying in Hinduism? I think it was Maa is God or something similar, it was from a comedy scene, with a priest and his family, Saw it in Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaye - loved that movie, I’m a fan of both Salman and Rani).
Because of our Parents we have this Life.
We ought to Love, Forgive and Respect them.
Maathru Devo Bhava - Mother is God
Pithru Devo Bhava - Father is God
Aacharya Devo Bhava - Guru/Teacher is God
Athidhi Devo Bhava - Guest is God
When somebody visits us be it a relative, a friend or even a stranger, we offer them the best hospitality… Even if you just ate till your stomach full and visit us, you cannot leave till you eat and drink something, if you leave, it is an insult to us, lol… we were taught as kids not to ask a guest when they are planning to leave, eat after they eat or along with them but not before… there are lot of these cultural behaviours that make me fall in love with it again and again.
If you love Salman and Rani, I recommend watching Srk and Kajol movies too, they are considered to be evergreen classics… and they are bollywood movies, in the South, we have many other local language industries which have good movies too, you can find on Netflix… for example RRR.
