1) THE IMMORTAL EMBRYO, DOCTRINE OF THE BABY BOY
The surname Sun (孫, “macaque” or “grandson”) was chosen because Wukong resembles a macaque monkey* (猢猻, husun). Also, his given name Wukong (悟空, “awakened to emptiness”) is based on the religious moniker of an 8th-century Chinese Buddhist monk. who lived in India. However, the surname references Daoist internal practices. Talking about the individual components of the surname, the Master Subodhi states:
“Zi [子] means boy and xi [系] means baby, and that name exactly accords with the fundamental Doctrine of the Baby Boy [正合嬰兒之本論]. So your surname will be Sun”.
According to the religious scholar and ‘Journey to the West’-translator Anthony C. Yu explains, “The Baby Boy is none other than the ‘holy embryo or shengtai 聖胎,’ the avatar of the realized state of immortality in the adept’s body”.
Daoist doctrine dictates that the three vital essences of jing (semen), qi (breath), and shen (spirit) combine to create this holy embryo. Daoist and Buddhist texts sometimes illustrate realized immortality or enlightenment as the image of a baby on a practitioner’s stomach.

The cryptic methods briefly summarized in the poem recited by Master Subodhi find their origins in dogmatic Daoist internal practices that emerged during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). When Subodhi warns Wukong to “Store these bodily substances lest there be a leak”, he is referring to the first of three stages in the forging of an immortal spirit body. It involves transforming chaste semen (jing, 精) into pneumatic energy (qi, 氣) and guiding it to the brain, where it is purified and then circulated throughout the body, resulting in the formation of a spiritual pearl in the Cinnabar Field (dantian, 丹田), or the body’s spiritual furnace located in the lower abdomen.

This part is referring to the second stage, involving the inhalation and guidance of yang energy through various organs (the “five phases”) in the body to bolster the spirit (shen, 神). This nurturing of the pearl causes it to sprout like a seed and blossom into a golden lotus (“amidst flames”) in the spiritual furnace. The lotus is considered the early stages of an immortal spirit embryo. The third stage involves the nurturing of said embryo to maturation with spiritual energies and eventually guiding it upwards and out the Heavenly Gate (tianguan, 天關), or the top of the crown. This results in a fledgling immortal spirit body that must be trained over an additional three year period in which it learns to travel far and wide apart from the physical vessel.

Adepts in the succeed of their practice gain supernatural powers, including the ability to be in two places at once, to move quickly from one place to another, to know past and future, to divine people’s thoughts, and so on.
Various facets of the aforementioned Song-era practices, such as the breathing methods from stage two above, have a much older pedigree. Journey to the West describes Sun secretly performing “breathing exercises before the hour of Wu and after the hour of Zi” (before noon and after midnight). This time-based practice is described in the fourth-century CE work Wondrous Record of the Golden Casket on the Spirit Immortals’ Practice of Eating Qi (Shenxian shiqi jin’gui miaolu, 神仙食氣金櫃妙錄):
"Always practice after midnight [and before noon] in the period of living qi [yang energy] … In this qi-practice, the time after noon and before midnight is called the period of dead qi [yin energy]. Do not practice then”. So by practicing during the prescribed hours, We absorb the yang energy that we need to fuel our immortality.

1) Breath of Healing ~
The immortal breath is also shown to have other special abilities. For instance, Wukong uses it to heal a gaping wound in his stomach:
“Grasping the skins of his belly and bringing them together with his hands, he blew his magic breath on his abdomen, yelling, “Grow!” At once his belly closed up completely.”
“As he blew divine breaths into their visceral cavities. Their primordial spirits yuanshen, 元神] were thus restored to their original abodes.”
This suggests that Wukong’s immortal breath also grants the disciples some form of immortality.
2) Soul-Transformative ~
Sun’s immortal breath also has the ability to manipulate souls. For example, Wukong uses it in an arcane ritual designed to bestow three human disciples with super human strength.
In one of the adventures Wukong uses the immortal breath to transform an old man’s soul into “ether” for easy transport back to the world of the living.
“In a moment, he began to breathe once more and the old man revived.”
The phrase “immortal breath” (xianqi , 仙氣) is missing in the original Chinese, but the ability’s use is understood as the passage mentions Monkey “blowing” (chui , 吹) on the soul.
This immortal breath is also shown capable of transforming the magic iron staff by Wukong’s will.

In the middle of the night, Wukong’s soul is tied up and dragged to the World of Darkness. He is informed there that his life in the human world has come to an end. In anger, Wukong fights his way through the World of Darkness to complain to “The Ten Kings,” who are the judges of the dead. The Ten Kings try to address the complaint and calm Wukong by saying many people in the world have the same name and the fetchers of the dead may have gotten the wrong name. Wukong demands to see the register of life and death, then scribbles out his name, thus making him untouchable by the fetchers of death, along with the names of all of the monkeys in his tribe. It is because Wukong has learned magic/magical arts as a disciple to Master Subodhi that he can scare the Ten Kings, demanding from them the book of mortals and removing his name, thus making him even more immortal. After this incident, the Ten Kings complain to the Jade Emperor.
● Now in our past and therefore inevitably in our present our name and information has been removed from the ledger of the lord of the underworld (Yanluowang).
● All the energetic archetypes of this event, the alchemy of our own soul, now obtain the benefits and effects that are consequent to this specific event in our past.
● Unprecedented potential for immortality and eternal life, which permeates every single cell of our body and every single area of our energy system.

1) PEACHES OF IMMORTALITY
Soon after the Ten Kings complain to the Jade Emperor, the Court of Heaven appoints Sun Wukong as “Keeper of the Heavenly Horses,” a fancy name for a stable boy. Angered by this, Wukong rebels and the Havoc in Heaven begins. During the Havoc in Heaven, Wukong is assigned to be the “Guardian of the Heavenly Peach Garden” The garden includes three types of peaches, each of which grant over 3,000 years of life. The first type blooms every three thousand years; anyone who eats it will become immortal, and their body will become both light and strong. The second type blooms every six thousand years; anyone who eats it will be able to fly and enjoy eternal youth. The third type blooms every nine thousand years; anyone who eats it will become “eternal as heaven and earth, as long-lived as the sun and moon.” While serving as the guardian, Wukong does not hesitate to eat the peaches thus granting him immortality and the abilities that come with the peaches. If Wukong had not been appointed as the Guardian of the Heavenly Peach Garden, he would not have eaten the Peaches of Immortality and would not have gained another level of immortality.
2) HEAVENLY WINE
Because of Wukong’s rebellious antics, Wukong is not considered as an important celestial deity and is thus not invited to the Queen Mother of the West’s royal banquet. After finding out that every other important deity was invited, Wukong impersonates one of the deities that was invited and shows up early to see why the banquet is important. He immediately is distracted by the aroma of the wine and decides to steal and drink it. The heavenly wine has the ability to turn anyone who drinks it to an immortal.
3) PILLS OF LONGEVITY IN THE LAOZI LABORATORY
While drunk from the heavenly wine, Wukong stumbles into Laozi alchemy lab, where he finds Laozi’s pills of longevity, known as “The Immortals’ Greatest Treasure.” Filled with curiosity about the pills, Wukong eats a gourd of them. Those who eat the pills will become immortal. If Wukong had not been drunk from the heavenly wine, he would not have stumbled into Laozi’s alchemy lab and eaten the pills of longevity.
(An elixir or pill sought by Chinese alchemists to confer physical and spiritual immortality).
● Invincibility increased exponentially.
● The blend of these divine foods are now part of our past as well as present, we are immortal, eternal, invincible.
THE SECOND BATTLE AGAINST THE DIVINE ARMY AND THE CLASH WITH ERLANG SHEN; THE DEFEAT AND THE ARREST
49 DAYS TRAPPED IN THE MAGIC OVEN OF LAOZI
Aftermath of Immortality:
Following Wukong’s three cause-and-effect methods of immortality during his time in heaven, he escapes back to his home at the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit. The Court of Heaven finds out what Wukong has done and a battle to capture Wukong ensues. Due to the five levels of immortality Wukong has achieved, his body has become nearly invincible and thus survives the multiple execution attempts by heaven. In the notable last execution, Wukong was placed inside Laozi’s furnace in hopes that he will be distilled into the elixir of the pills of immortality. Wukong survives 49 days of the samadhi fire in Laozi’s furnace and gains the ability to recognize evil; meanwhile, being refined in the crucible extracts yet more of the impurities of mortality and leaves him with another immortality. In desperation, the Court of Heaven seeks help from Buddha, who finally imprisons Wukong under a mountain. Wukong’s immortality and abilities ultimately come into use after Guanyin suggests he become a disciple of Tang Sanzang in the Journey to the West. In the story, he protects Sanzang from evil demons who wish to eat Sanzang to achieve immortality. Wukong’s own immortality protects him from the various ways the demons try to kill him, such as fighting, beheading, disemboweling, poisoning, and boiling oil.
● It is said that already invincible and immortal Wukong became even stronger during the 49 days in which he was locked up in Laozi’s magic oven (it was an execution attempt).
● The fortifying, upgrading and benefits derived from this survival feat are now a part of us.
THE 500 YEARS OF PRISON UNDER THE CELESTIAL MOUNTAIN OF THE FIVE ELEMENTS

The accomplishments of these 81 tribulations as disciple of Master Tang lead the Monkey King to Buddhahood, becoming the “Victorious Fighting Buddha”.
The whole adventure of the pilgrimage in the western lands. The dangers overcome, the challenges faced and all the benefits and experience gained from this adventure are now part of our being.
The journey of redemption accompanying Tang Sanzang to the temple on Vulture Peak in India to collect the 3 volumes of the Holy Sutras to help the Chinese people to learn the ways of righteousness and enlightenment.
● Fight against Bai Long Ma. The white dragon son of the dragon king of the west sea.
● Meeting with the bloodlust demon Zhu Bajie and following covenant.
● Meeting with the ogre of the flowing sands river - Sha Wujing.
GINSENG FRUIT (人參果; MAN-FRUIT)
Sometime during the journey, Wukong and his companions obtain Ginseng fruit (人參果; Man-fruit), a fruit even rarer and more powerful than the Peaches of Immortality, as only 30 of them will grow off one particular tree only found on the Longevity Mountain (萬壽山) every 10,000 years. While one smell can grant 360 years of life, consuming one will grant another 47,000 years of life.
In addition to all of the immortality-granting wines and medicines that the Monkey King had consumed while in heaven, upon reaching the Buddha’s temple, pilgrims were provided with Buddhist equivalents of such foods, therefore making Sun Wukong even more immortal; an 8-fold immortal.
The journey to the west was long and filled with immense perils.
The group face vast natural obstacles and calamities, bandits and sorcerers, demons and monsters. Not only they battled with enemies and elements, they would each struggle with their own inner natures and clash amongst each other.
But no matter what danger they met or what challenge laid before them, tang sanzang and his disciples always managed to overcome the obstacles both inward and outward, growing stronger and more enlightened with every step of their dangerous adventure.
After 14 years of traveling they finally came into sight of the western lands and complete their assignment.
● Buddha blessings: Buddha bestowed upon them amnesty from their past offenses and gifts for their courage and sacrifices.
● Obtaining the Buddhahood.
● Earning the title of: The Victorious Fighting Buddha
● The entire journey to the western lands is now part of our past.
● The journey is much longer and more complete than summarized here, the alchemy of the past in this NFT encompasses the entire journey.
