Yes they can. But not all fields. Some complex fields are not available to them. For example, the captain wrote about this in the topic of the plasma flower:

Not sure if they can hold the entire concept of it easily, its really really ‘larger’ than their concept capacity. but they will definitely do it at the best they can, and some of the older ones may have grown enough to do it.
