Request B12 injections. (Stole the post from user OM_ but just reposting)
Simple enoughâŚ
Important info below
Vitamin B12 Injections:
Vitamin supplements are very popular.
People often believe theyâll act as a safety net and help to ensure adequate nutrient intake.
Supplementing with vitamin B12 is particularly common, because deficiency is widespread.
In fact, many people regularly get injections with vitamin B12.
These are claimed to help with energy levels, brain function and weight loss, to name a few.
This article reviews B12 injections and whether they are something you should consider.
What is Vitamin B12 and What Does it Do?
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin, also known as cobalamin.
It plays a vital role in brain function and the production of DNA and red blood cells.
Chemically, vitamin B12 can exist in a number of different forms, but all of them contain the mineral cobalt.
The vitamin can be stored in the liver for a long time, so it may take a few years for a deficiency to develop (1Trusted Source).
BOTTOM LINE:
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that plays an important role in brain function and red blood cell production.
Many People Are Deficient
The recommended daily intake (RDI) of vitamin B12 is 6 micrograms per day.
Deficiency is common, especially in people who follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.
In fact, itâs thought that up to 90% of people following these diets have a deficiency (2Trusted Source , 3Trusted Source).
This is because B12 is only found naturally in animal foods.
However, vegans and vegetarians are not the only ones who are deficient. Even some meat eaters donât absorb it very well (4Trusted Source , 5Trusted Source).
Unlike other vitamins, the absorption of vitamin B12 depends on a protein produced in your stomach, called intrinsic factor.
Intrinsic factor binds to vitamin B12, so that you can absorb it into the blood. People who donât produce enough intrinsic factor can become deficient.
Deficiency is particularly common in elderly people, because the ability to absorb vitamin B12 can decrease with age (6Trusted Source, 7Trusted Source, 8Trusted Source, 9Trusted Source, 10Trusted Source, 11Trusted Source).
Other people at risk of deficiency include those who have had intestinal surgery, including weight loss surgery. Those with diseases that affect the gut, such as Crohnâs disease or celiac disease, are also at risk (12Trusted Source, 13Trusted Source, 14Trusted Source, 15Trusted Source).
BOTTOM LINE:
Those at greatest risk of vitamin B12 deficiency are vegans and vegetarians, who get little to no B12 from the diet. Deficiency can also be caused by poor absorption.
Vitamin B12 Shots Are Very Effective
An untreated vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to neurological problems or pernicious anemia, which occurs when your body doesnât have enough B12 to produce the amount of red blood cells it needs (16Trusted Source ).
Vitamin B12 shots are the most common way to prevent or treat a deficiency. The injections are prescribed by a doctor and given intramuscularly, or into muscle.
Injections are usually given as hydroxocobalamin or cyanocobalamin. These are very effective at raising blood levels of B12 and preventing/reversing a deficiency.
BOTTOM LINE:
If you are deficient in vitamin B12, then the injections are very effective at raising your blood levels.
Potential Health Benefits
Given the vital roles that vitamin B12 plays in your body, a deficiency can have serious health consequences.
In fact, low blood levels of the vitamin have been linked to several health problems.
Brain Function
Low levels of vitamin B12 have been linked to a decline in brain function.
Two recent reviews found that there may be a link between low blood levels and the development of dementia (17Trusted Source, 18Trusted Source).
However, results have been mixed and treatment with vitamin B12 wasnât effective at improving brain function in people with normal brain function (19Trusted Source, 20Trusted Source, 21Trusted Source).
Depression
Itâs been suggested that there may be a link between low vitamin B12 levels and depression.
However, one review found that treating depression with vitamin B12 didnât reduce the severity of symptoms.
Nevertheless, it was suggested that taking the vitamin on a long-term basis could help prevent a relapse into depression (22Trusted Source).
Currently, there is a lack of quality research in this area. Higher quality studies are needed to find out if there is a link between vitamin B12 and depression (23Trusted Source).
Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a disease in which the loss of bone mass results in weaker bones and an increased risk of bone fractures.
Interestingly, low blood levels of vitamin B12 have been linked with reduced bone mass (24Trusted Source).
Therefore, itâs been suggested that taking vitamin B12 may reduce your risk of osteoporosis. However, studies have provided mixed results (25Trusted Source, 26Trusted Source, 27Trusted Source).
Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration is a condition that causes you to gradually lose central vision, usually in both eyes.
In people aged 50 and over, adequate consumption of vitamin B12 is thought to be important for maintaining good vision and protecting against macular degeneration.
In one large study, 5,200 women received 1,000 mcg of vitamin B12 daily, as well as other B vitamins and folic acid (28Trusted Source).
7 years later, the study found a 35% lower risk of age-related macular degeneration among the women who took the supplements.
Although the reduction in risk canât be attributed to vitamin B12 only, it does suggest that getting enough may be important.
Other Claims
Recently, vitamin B12 injections and infusions have become popular among healthy people who donât appear to have a deficiency.
Advocates of this approach claim that regular injections can boost energy levels and help with weight loss and mood.
However, there is little to no evidence to support these claims.
BOTTOM LINE:
Ensuring that you have enough vitamin B12 is important for brain function and mental, bone and eye health. Injections are probably useless if you donât have a deficiency.
Safety and Side Effects
Vitamin B12 injections are generally considered to be very safe. They have no major side effects.
However, in very rare cases, some people can experience side effects caused by allergic reactions or sensitivity (29Trusted Source, 30Trusted Source).

Hello Captain, I just realize that NFT submission is stopped, so i decide to post my researches about gene therapy on eyesights here. Maybe some info could be useful for your future projects.
Objective: Improve and Recover Poor Eyesights
Suggested Method for this NFT : Gene Therapy for Myopia (nearsighted)
Gene Therapy
Gene Therapy is getting popular from last decade. Some people are born with bad eyesight because they inherited from their parentsâ mutated eye genes. Non invasive eye treatments (like eye exercises, Bates methodsâŚ.) may offer little help because their eyes are programmed to be deteriorated. With invasive methods (laser surgery, eyeglasses), their eyes further affirm to go downhill as the method does not cure the root cause.
Genes, which are made of DNA, are the cellâs instruction manual, providing information on what molecules the cell should make and how the cell should act. The purpose of gene therapy is to try and change how the cell is acting by putting in a new gene or replacing a broken gene.
Common types of gene therapy:
- Gene Replacement (a new gene is introduced into a cell to replace a broken gene)
- Gene Editing (molecular scissors are used to âeditâ a broken gene by cutting out the mutation)
- Gene therapy that stops cell death (stop retina cell from dying, so vision will not be lost)
- Gene Therapy to replace antii-vegf injections (Anti-VEGF injections are the most common treatment for Age Related Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Macular Edema, due to blood vessels in the retina grow uncontrolly and leak fluid into the eye. It slows down the growth of blood vessels)
Gene Therapy & Clinical Trials to Treat Vision Loss | Fighting Blindness Canada - Gene therapy given through eyedrop â Case study: A patient has mutations in a gene that helps produce a protein called collagen 7, which holds together both skin and corneas. The treatment, called Vyjuvek, uses an inactivated herpes simplex virus to deliver working copies of that gene. The eyedrops use the same liquid as the skin version, just without the added gel.

RPE65 gene is injected into the eye, under the retina because it is packaged into a safe virus called adeno-associated virus (AAV). The genetically modified AAV was able to significantly restore vision in blind children, enabling them to complete tasks such as walking through a maze without bumping into soft objects, or catching a ball. This gene also helps to correct Age related macular degeneration (AMD)

SERPINE3 gene is highly expressed in zebrafish eye. A functional experiment is tested on zebrafish because its retina is organized into layers which are similar to those found in humans. The lab deleted Serpine3 during zebrafish development, causing adult animals to have deformed eyes and disrupted the organization of the cell layers in the retina. This suggests that vertebrate eyes need the product of serpine3 in order to function properly. The lab also found that Serpine3 are associated with refractive errors in the eye and macular degeneration, suggesting that this gene may also play a role in human eye diseases and good vision.

LEPREL1 gene encodes an enzyme that is essential for the final modification of collagen in the eye. In the absence of the active form of this enzyme, aberrant collagen is formed, causing the human eyeball to be longer than normal. As a consequence, light beams entering the eyeball focus in front of the retina rather than on the retina itself and myopia emerges.

Genes causing myopia
⢠Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in these genes results in high myopia
BLID, SCO2, 62CTNND2, 63 MIPEP, 65ZC3H11B, VIPR2 66, 67 and SNTB167, 68
⢠Molecular cause of myopia is attained by modification in the genes
ANTXR2, KCNQ5, LAMA2, PRSS56, RASGRF, RDH5, VAX2, SHISA6, TJP2, TOX/CA8, ZIC2 68, 70

7. Hyperopia (Farsightedness)
⢠PDE11A plays an important role in conduction of signals for the management of eye growth. Tetratricopeptide repeat domain 30A (TTC3OA) protein and the alkylglycerone phosphate synthase (AGPS) are also involved in signal conduction between neurons along with PDE11A. The variant PDE11A is responsible for causing hyperopia.
⢠Cataracts develop by the mutation of AGPS, which is combined with a disorder of the multisystem development.
The MFRP gene helps to maintain the shape of the cornea and aids in the focusing mechanism. Mutation of this gene leads to farsightedness, retinitis pigmentosa, and micropthalamos.
8. Astigmatism (An uneven cornea surface which causes near and far vision blurry)
⢠The PDGFRA gene binds to the receptor called platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF). PDGF is identified in the multiplying of retinal tissues, corneal epithelium, and it regulates the movement of corneal fibroblast. When the PDGFRA gene is arranged with three SNPs on chromosome 4q12, it results in the corneal bio-metrics leading to assurance of corneal astigmatism.
⢠The SHH (sonic hedgehog) gene plays a vital role in the development of several tissues, which also includes the eye. Studies have proclaimed that SHH gene is associated with irregular astigmatism.
⢠The VAX2 gene plays a major function in cornea development and increases the risk of astigmatism.
- Presbyopia (Cannot see close objects due to aging)
⢠Crystalline alpha A (CRYAA) comprises two genes: alpha-A and alpha-B. Mutations in these genes lead to congenital cataract and presbyopia.
⢠The protein concealed by a gene called RP1L1 along with retinal-specific protein plays a crucial role in altering the rod photoreceptors, thereby affecting the photosensitivity. Occult macular dystrophy is caused by the variation of this gene.
Traditional non-invasive methods:
- Eye Exercises
- Bates Method (swinging body left and right while eyes are relax and not focusing at anything)
- Staring at Autostereogram (3d pictures that forces both eyes to work together HARD)
- Increase bloodflow to head or lower dantain (more oxygen for better vision, temporary fix)
- Gabor Patch (train the communication between optic nerve and brain on object recognition, rather than fixing the eyeball structure)
Traditional Invasive methods: - Laser Surgery (Reshaping cornea)
- Eyeglasses (Changes and locks your eyeballs at the current shape, which prevents them to return to the 20/20 round shape)
- Contact Lens (Soft, Hard, early age corrective len) (Dry up the eyes, block eye from inhaling oxygen)
- Pressure Corrector (Only available in Russia. Doctors use pressure to reshape eyeballs so that light can focus at Macula proeprly â the small area of retina which registers sharp, central vision)
Invasive methods can solve patientsâ eyesight issues quickly, but it only treats the symptoms, not the causes. Hence, eyesights usually continue to get worse along with time. Non invasive methods usually require more times, and the results are mixed, depending on the patientsâ health, diet and living style.
â A new research finding that came out after the release of Kidney and Bladder Specialist so itâs worth taking a look at for a future kidney related update/release.
Duke-NUS and NHCS scientists first in the world to regenerate diseased kidney
Blocking an immune-regulating protein reverses the damage caused by acute and chronic kidney disease, a preclinical study suggests.
They teamed up with scientists in Germany to investigate the role of IL-11, which is known to trigger scarring in other organs, including the liver, lungs and heart, in acute and chronic kidney disease.
Their findings implicate the protein in triggering a cascade of molecular processes in response to kidney injury that leads to inflammation, fibrosis (scarring) and loss of function. They also discovered that inhibiting IL-11 with a neutralising antibody can prevent and even reverse kidney damage in this setting.
âWe found that IL-11 is detrimental to kidney function and triggers the development of chronic kidney disease,â said Professor Cook. âWe also showed that anti-IL11 therapy can treat kidney failure, reverse established chronic kidney disease, and restore kidney function by promoting regeneration in mice, while being safe for long term use.â
More specifically, the researchers showed that renal tubular cells, which line the tiny tubes inside kidneys, release IL-11 in response to kidney damage. This turns on a signalling cascade that ultimately leads to increased expression of a gene, called Snail Family Transcriptional Repressor 1 (SNAI1), which arrests cellular growth and promotes kidney dysfunction.
In a preclinical model of human diabetic kidney disease, turning off this process by administering an antibody that binds to IL-11 led to proliferation of the kidney tubule cells and reversal of fibrosis and inflammation, resulting in the regeneration of the injured kidney and the restoration of renal function.
While clinical trials of an antibody that binds to another pro-fibrotic molecule called transforming growth factor beta have been unsuccessful, this new approach brings hope of a new target.
âBy boosting the kidneyâs intrinsic capability to regenerate, Prof Cook and Asst Prof Widjaja have shown that we can restore function to a damaged kidney,â said Prof Coffman, who is also the principal investigator of the Diabetes Study in Nephropathy and other Microvascular Complications (DYNAMO), a large collaborative study that aims to find new solutions for the prevention and treatment of diabetic kidney disease. âThis discovery could be a real game-changer in the treatment of chronic kidney diseaseâwhich is a major public health concern in Singapore and globallyâbringing us one step closer to delivering the benefits promised by regenerative medicine.â
